Cheryl Hines PokerCheryl Hines is an actress and celebrity poker player most famous for her role as Cheryl David on the HBO comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm. She also became well-known in card-playing circles for her role as the trash-talking poker pro in The Grand.

Cheryl Hines - Early Life

Born on September 21st, 1965 in Miami Beach, Florida, Hines was born to Rosemary Graham Harbolt and a father she describes as “sort of a redneck.” While growing up part of the time in Frostproof, Florida, Hines described her father as driving an El Camino with a “Honk If You Love Jesus” bumper sticker.

Raised Catholic with her two brothers and one sister, Hines admits to never giving much thought to religion. “I just sort of went along with the herd,” she stated in an interview. “The priest would come over after mass and watch football and drink beer with my dad.”

She attended high school in Tallahassee, Florida, becoming a member of the Young Actors Theatre. Following graduation, she attended beauty school at the Lively Technical Center in Tallahassee. After getting her license, she cut hair for a year and worked as a bartender at night to earn money for college.

Cheryl Hines - Acting Jobs

After getting her degree, Hines landed a job in a print ad for a hair salon. Then, she received a part on the Swamp Thing television series. “Sadly,” said Hines jokingly, “it didn’t quite have the impact that I was hoping it would.”

This brought about a move to Los Angeles, and she worked for a time as a personal assistant to Rob Reiner. Also working as a bartender in a downtown hotel, she happened to meet Phil Hartman’s sister who suggested she look into the improvisational theater company known as The Groundlings.

While she couldn’t afford the classes offered by The Groundlings, her co-workers chipped in for her birthday and helped her get into her first class, which happened to be taught by Lisa Kudrow. The Groundlings were impressed with Hines, and she was asked to join the company.

Her talent at improvisation served her well when auditioning for Curb Your Enthusiasm. She and star Larry David hit it off so well that she was cast within days. Their screen chemistry was so natural that many friends back home in Florida believed the two were really a married couple. In 2006, Hines received an Outstanding Supporting Actress Emmy nomination for her role on the show.

She would also go on to win the first round of Calvin Ayre Wild Card Poker, defeating noted pros such as Erick Lindgren and Humberto Brenes. In 2006, Hines participated in the Pro-Am Poker Equalizer, and she has also competed in the Ladies’ World Championship at the WSOP.

This led her to being cast in the improvisational poker comedy known as The Grand. Also starring Woody Harrelson, Shannon Elizabeth, Michael McKean, Jason Alexander, Richard Kind, Gabe Kaplan, David Cross and Ray Romano, the movie focuses on a Las Vegas poker tournament very similar to the annual World Series of Poker.

In 2002, Hines married Paul Young, the chairman of the Groundlings Theater. Their daughter, Catherine Rose, was born on March 8th, 2004.
